The Digital Lamp of Yao — Mzimu: The Digital Lamp of Yao

Know Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, often called the “Warm Heart of Africa” because of its friendly people. Its capital is Lilongwe. The country is dominated by Lake Malawi, one of Africa’s largest lakes, which supports fishing and tourism. Malawi’s economy relies mainly on agriculture, with crops like tobacco, tea, and maize. Despite its natural beauty and cultural richness, Malawi faces challenges such as poverty and limited infrastructure.

MISISONAL VISION
Reaching Malawi's Vulnerable and Digitally Connected

While Malawi is a Christian-majority nation, it is home to the Yao — identified by Joshua Project as the most sizable unreached people group in sub-Saharan Africa, with less than 2% identifying as evangelical Christians. A digital strategy bypasses cultural barriers by introducing the Gospel through modern, culturally relevant media in the Yao language, reaching rural and peri-urban youth, Muslim communities in Mangochi, Machinga, and Salima, and women with limited digital literacy.

Data-Driven Accountability

A digital dashboard tracks key metrics across all 15 channels in real time — gospel exposures, decisions for Christ, and follow-up numbers. Quarterly reviews drive continuous improvement, and ten short plus two documentary-style testimony videos are produced annually. The national CCC office provides oversight and alignment with national strategy. Malawi's Yao-specific metrics are tracked separately to measure penetration into this strategic unreached people group.

Amina Mwale
23 · Yao Community, Mangochi · Digital Discovery Group Member
Amina grew up in a devout Muslim household along Lake Malawi's shores, where Christianity was considered foreign and colonial. When a WhatsApp audio message in fluent Yao landed in her phone — a gospel story told by a voice that sounded like her grandmother — she didn't delete it. She listened three times. "It spoke of a God who sees the poor and the forgotten," she said. "I thought only our tradition spoke like that." A Yao-language discovery group, facilitated by a trained local missionary, met quietly in a nearby home. Over twelve weeks, Amina worked through Scripture in her mother tongue for the first time and made a personal decision for Christ — a decision she describes as "finally understanding a song I had always heard but never knew the words to."
"The Gospel came to me in my own voice. How could I say it was foreign?" Today, Amina helps facilitate a women's listening group in her village, where six other Yao women gather weekly around a solar audio player.
