Know Eritrea

Eritrea is a country located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and the Red Sea.

Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 after a long struggle for independence. The capital city is Asmara, which is known for its well-preserved Italian colonial architecture.

The country has a single-party presidential system, led for many years by President Isaias Afwerki. Eritrea has faced criticism over issues related to political freedom, human rights, and mandatory national service.

The economy is based on agriculture, mining, and port activities along the Red Sea coast. Several ethnic groups live in Eritrea, and languages spoken include Tigrinya, Arabic, and English.

Overall, Eritrea is known for its strategic location along the Red Sea, its independence history, and its unique blend of African and Middle Eastern cultural influences.

Eritrea is often called the ‘Hermit Kingdom of Africa’ — a closed nation where the government persecutes Christians and the Gospel has never freely reached the Muslim majority. Traditional missions are nearly impossible. The digital approach, using encrypted WhatsApp groups and private channels, allows the building of relationships and sharing of the Gospel safely, privately, and in a culturally resonant way. As a local believer put it: ‘The Gospel cannot be stopped by borders or walls.’

Data-Driven Accountability

A secure, privacy-first digital dashboard tracks key metrics — with strict data-protection protocols given Eritrea's political context. Individual identities are never stored alongside location data. Quarterly reviews are conducted remotely. Ten short plus two documentary testimony videos are produced annually via diaspora partners. All national oversight is conducted with appropriate security protocols to protect local believers.

Dawit Tesfaye
28 · Asmara · Persecuted Believer & Covert Digital Missionary
Dawit was raised in the Eritrean Orthodox Church but had seen friends imprisoned for their faith and kept his own belief private for years. When a Tigrinya-language audio about the nature of grace reached him through a diaspora WhatsApp contact, he listened three times in a row with his earphones in. 'It was theology I had never heard — not obligation but invitation,' he said. He connected with an encrypted WhatsApp discipleship group run by a trained digital missionary outside Eritrea. Over twelve weeks, studying Scripture through voice messages and PDF summaries, Dawit experienced what he describes as 'meeting Christ for the first time, rather than just knowing about Him.' He now covertly facilitates a small listening group of six in Asmara — sharing audio content through a closed WhatsApp group. 'We have to be careful,' he says. 'But the Word is worth the risk.'
"For years I had faith but no freedom. This gave me a community I could not see but could feel." Dawit's encrypted group is one of three known digital fellowships operating inside Eritrea today.
