Missional Vision

Reaching Ethiopia’s Unreached

Ethiopia presents a diverse and challenging landscape with major Christian and Muslim populations, yet many small, remote, and distinct ethnic groups remain essentially unreached. Overcoming linguistic and geographic barriers to effectively communicate the uncompromised Gospel to these specific communities is a primary missional challenge.

The approach addresses unique cultural and linguistic barriers by deploying appropriate methods and content, and equipping indigenous believers as multipliers to effectively engage these unreached groups directly.

The ADD strategy, contextualized for Ethiopia, utilizes local-language content, mobile technology, and equips indigenous believers to plant and disciple churches within these groups.

Priority target groups: Small unreached ethnic groups in South Omo area (Arbore, Karo, Banna) · Nomadic populations in remote border regions · Isolated language communities

"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?" — Romans 10:14 NIV

Fatuma Hassen
31 · Dire Dawa · Muslim-Background Believer
Fatuma was a devout Oromo-speaking Muslim who ran a small shop near Dire Dawa's market. A friend — herself recently converted — shared a WhatsApp audio with Fatuma: a woman's voice in fluent Oromo telling a story about a woman caught in public shame and the unexpected mercy she received. 'I thought it was a folk story at first,' Fatuma says. 'When I realised it was from the Bible, I was already moved.' She joined an encrypted discovery group that met through voice notes every three days. The facilitator — a female digital missionary trained by ADD — guided her through six weeks of Scripture stories without pressure. 'Nobody told me I had to leave my family or change my name,' she recalls. 'They just showed me who Jesus was and let me decide.' Fatuma gave her life to Christ at week five. Her husband, initially opposed, joined the listening group one month later.
"I thought the Gospel was for other people. Then I heard it in Oromo — and I knew it was for me." Today, Fatuma facilitates a women's Oromo-language discovery group reaching nine women across two neighbourhoods.
